Every so often I come across a postcard that raises more questions than it answers. This postcard for Burke’s Deacon Jones Restaurant doubles as a carry-out menu/enigma.
Deacon Jones Restaurants were a chain that specialized in chicken and fish. I have found references and addresses for locations in East Detroit and Monroe, Michigan but I know that those aren’t this specific location.
Do you have any answers of clues to steer me in the right direction? Send me a message!
UPDATE (2/1/2017):
Well, lo and behold a commenter named Jeff showed up to provide information. It turns out it located was in East Pointe, Michigan:
I remember Deacon Jones as a kid growing up in East Detroit (now East Pointe). It was located on the corner of Kelly Road and Ash. The building is still there but it has been extensively remodeled. You can still make out the distinct roof line.
I thought I remembered them carrying something call city chicken which wasn’t chicken at all, cubed pork pineapple all breaded and fried. I could be wrong, I was only 5 or 6 at the time. This would have been about 1965 – 66. I have a link to google maps for your reference.

My father had a franchise in Harlem, Ny. 116th St and Lexington Ave. My mother worked there as well.
The storefront of your father’s store is seen in the movie “Cotton comes to Harlem”
I had never heard of Deacon Jones until 5 minutes ago while watching Cotton Comes to Harlem. It looked interesting and I really enjoy searching for information about long closed slices of “Americana”. We could use a DJ out here in Los Angeles!
I remember when I grew up in Detroit there was a Deacon Jones chicken and fish restaurant it was a great place to eat. It was located on Warren Ave about a block away from Alter rd.It was back around 1967 I was 7yrs old
I worked at Deacon Jones when I was a teen; my very first job earning only $.45/hour as a dishwasher! Worked my way up from a dishwasher to a cook during the ’60s. This was my first job and I learned so much about life, responsibility and love in the several years I worked for the Burke’s, my manager Mike Tripiano and head chef Robert Barrette. Life lessons that I will never forget.
Why was it named Deacon Jones?
When I was Very little
I’m pretty sure there was a “Deacon Jones'”
Off Schaeffer Road & Oakwood Boulevard.
@ Boarderline of Detroit ,MI & Melvindale,Mi.
Sadly ,The 5 main People I remember going here with have passed.
And All I have are Memories of it
So many People who are New to that area tell me…They never Heard if it,or Remember it being there.
But,@58 yrs young. I remember.
After “Deacon Jones” closed the building became the Host to”Swanson’s” and
Then “Ursula’s ” a Restaurant with a little Boutique in Corner of the Restaurant between Doors & Cash register.
